Woman commits suicide over dowry demands in Noida

Noida: A 20-year-old girl succumbed to injuries while getting treatment at hospital after she tried to commit suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of a building in sector 63 area of Noida.

Cops said that the girl allegedly jumped off the building on April 24 and died on early Thursday morning.

As per reports, the deceased identified as Preeti, native of Wajidpur village in sector 63, was engaged to Rohit, a resident of Bahlolpur village in Greater Noida. The couple was scheduled to tie knots on July 28.

Victim's family members have alleged her fiancée and his family members to have demanded a car in dowry which bothered girl and she took the extreme step.

"Preeti was engaged to Rohit around three months ago and the couple had started talking on phone. Rohit was demanding a car in dowry but girl's family failed to fulfil the demand. On April 24 also Rohit had called Preeti for the car which bothered her and she jumped from the fourth floor of the building," reports

said.

Police officials said that the victim was rushed to Shivalik hospital in sector 51 of Noida and she suffered multiple fractures. While the girl was declared dead around 6am on Thursday, her family refused to let the police take the body for autopsy.

Hundreds of villagers along with family members of deceased reached phase-III police station and demanded action against the accused. However, they were pacified when senior police officials intervened and assured them to arrest the accused within next 24 hours.

Later they gathered at the hospital and denied the body for post mortem.

The body could only be picked up around 3pm after the city magistrate and Superintendent of Police (city) arrived at the spot.

Sudha Singh, SP-city said that a case had already been registered into the matter.

"A case has already been registered into the matter under relevant sections of IPC while other sections have been added after the death. Teams have been formed to work out the case and we are expecting to make the arrest soon," said Singh.
