Will liquor units be relocated near residential areas? Citizens hope that doesn't happen

The Apex Court's order on the removal of liquor vending units along the state and national highways has thrown some citizens into a frenzy. They are worried that these alcohol serving units will be closer to the residential societies in the city.

With complaints of liquor vending along busy city routes already a prominent issue in the city, the residents fear that the relocation will add to their woes.

The uncertainty over liquor vending units situated in Sector 29, Sohna road, Cyber city and MG road area have resulted in some of the owners scouting for nearby locations.

With decent spaces available in areas around Sushant Lok, DLF Phase-3 and HUDA sectors along Sohna road, citizens have expressed concern that many of the liquor vending units will relocate in proximity to these residential areas.

Also, concerns have been raised over the increase in liquor vending units along the Golf Course road and Golf Course extension road.

While Haryana Government has recently implemented stringent measures on drinking at public areas, the challenge to law and order due to public drinking still prevails in the city.

"There is a greater requirement to maintain the law and order problems caused due to the presence of these liquor vending units situated along the busy stretches of the city. As most of these liquor vending units have a strong clout it will not be difficult for them to find alternate spaces in the city," said Ankur Jain, a
resident of Golf Course road.

He also stated that the on-going issue is regarding the relocation of such shops to the residential areas. "This will cause safety and security issues for residents and commuters. There are already large number of complaints regarding the liquor vending units along Golf Course road and nearby areas of Golf Course extension road and MG road," added Jain.

Speaking on the challenges faced by professionals, Megha Malik worker at a multinational company in Golf Course road said, "Not only female professionals but also male professionals working for night shift have to be very careful when they venture outside for a break.

The presence of a large number of liquor vending around our office is a major security challenge for us."
There have been instances in the past where the residents have held protests and forced district authorities to remove the liquor vending units from these areas.
