Noida: Following a brief encounter with police on Tuesday night, a wanted criminal was arrested by Gautam Buddh Nagar police from Jaipuria Chowraha in Sector-62 of Noida.

According to police, around 11.30 pm Tuesday, Chokhe – a native of Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh – was travelling on a motorcycle with his accomplice, when cops intercepted him.

Sensing danger, Chokhe fired at the police party, leading to retaliatory fire by the cops.

"Acting on a tip-off that two accused wanted in many cases of heinous crimes in and around the district are coming on a motorcycle, we put the barricade for checking. The officers signalled them to stop for checking. However, the criminal tried to speed away and opened fire at the team.

"In retaliatory firing one accused Chokhe was hit in his leg while his accomplice Rohit managed to escape from the spot by taking advantage of darkness," said Pankaj Rai, SHO of Sector-58 police station.

The officer further said that more than 38 cases of various heinous criminal incidents have been registered against Chokhe in Gautam Buddh Nagar, Hapur, Bijnor and Bulandshahr districts.

"We have seized a country-made pistol, some live cartridges and a motorcycle without number plate from the possession of accused person. We have also launched a search operation to arrest the absconding criminal," Rai added.
