Visually-challenged students protest outside old PHQ

New Delhi: Visually challenged students of Jawaharlal Nehru University on Wednesday protested outside the old police headquarters against the assault on varsity students protesting over hostel fee hike. The students later submitted a memorandum of demands to the police and were assured that their complaints will be looked into.

The students met Delhi Police PRO and DCP (Central) Mandeep Singh Randhawa and apprised him of the "instances of lathi-charge and manhandling" of students during the protests on Monday.

According to police, students have given us a memorandum with their demands. They have heard their allegations and have told them that it will be enquired and proper steps would be taken.

"Delhi Police is a sensitive and professional force. We will inquire into such allegations. On that day, Delhi police exercised maximum restraint and professionally we tried to control the crowd," Randhawa told reporters.

According to police sources, in the memorandum students demanded action against those policemen involved in beating and assaulting them. The Delhi Police assured the students that their allegations will be enquired and proper steps would be taken.

The JNU visually impaired students' forum had called for a demonstration on Wednesday in front of the Delhi Police Headquarters against alleged lathi charge by police on the students of the University and to demand justice for persons with disabilities.

On November 18, Delhi Police in their press statement said that a large number of students had gathered at Jawahar Lal Nehru University to march towards the Parliament, even though they had been persuaded by Delhi Police not to do so violating the general orders.

They were effectively stopped and contained at Safdarjung Tomb near Jorbagh, at the border of the New Delhi District.

"The Delhi Police staff, despite continued defiance by some groups of students, methods of persuasion were resorted to, and there was no use of water cannons, tear gas shells or lathi-charge at any stage of the protest," police press statement reads.
