Vice President steps on the pedals on World Bicycle Day

New Delhi: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday flagged off a cycling rally at Connaught Place here, on the occasion of World Bicycle Day. He observed that the event is an inspiration for Delhiites to change their lifestyle by adopting cycling to reduce pollution and improvement their fitness.
The Vice President also unveiled a Smart Bike Station under the Public Bike Sharing (PBS) system introduced, by New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), which aims to provide a reasonably priced, environmental-friendly option to city residents for last mile connectivity.
NDMC chairman Naresh Kumar said that the PBS system will have a minimum of 500 bikes spread over 50 stations in the New Delhi area.
Explaining the smart features, Kumar said that the bikes are equipped with app-based integrated GPS tracking and smart-locking system, which will automatically lock the cycle if it is taken out of NDMC jurisdiction.
"A cyclist can use facility by registering on the 'NDMC 311' app and use the touch pad on the back of cycle to unlock it through an OTP. The app based system records the time when the bike unlocked and charges users a fee accordingly," said Kumar.
He further said that a dense network of bike stations at various points, including Metro Stations, bus stands, markets, office complexes, institutions, tourist spots, parks and residential areas will cover all around New Delhi.
The bike sharing facility will be available for a minimum cost of Rs 10 for 30 minutes, and a maximum of Rs 300 for more than eight hours.
Subscription for the bike sharing will also available from a minimum one week at Rs 199, to a maximum of one year at Rs 1,999. The facility will be available between 5 am to 12 am.
