Two security guards held for selling drugs in Gr Noida varsity
Greater Noida: Two security guards at Amity University here were arrested for possessing cannabis and selling it to students and others at the campus. Police on Wednesday said they recovered around 2.5 kg of the drug from their possession.
Cops said that the arrested guards were identified as Naveen Mishra of village Gurjarpur and Santosh Singh of Sutyana village. Mishra was held with 1.25 kg of cannabis, while Singh was carrying 1.2 kg cannabis when they were arrested late Tuesday night.
Both guards were deployed at Amity University campus in Knowledge Park and were selling drugs within the university, which cater to lakhs of students.
"Following the directions from Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Gautam Buddh Nagar, to crackdown on drug trafficking in the district, police got a tip-off that few guards of a renowned private university are selling drugs to students in Knowledge Park area. Police acted on the information and caught them red handed from university campus on Tuesday night," said Arvind Pathak, Station House Officer (SHO), Knowledge Park police station.
"Both accused have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and sent to jail after being produced before court on Wednesday afternoon," added Pathak.
Police officials said that the guards used to get cannabis at very low rate and sell them at much higher prices to students.
"During interrogation, it came to light they used to get cannabis at around Rs 20,000 per kg and sell them for Rs 200 per four grams. We are trying to get details as from where they were procuring the cannabis," a senior police officer said.
Meanwhile, Amity University officials, in a statement, said they have a zero-tolerance policy for drugs in the campus and the guards were employees of a private security agency.
"Amity has outsourced its security work to a private agency and the guards arrested were employed by it and not Amity University. The guards were arrested outside the campus and were not on duty at the time," a spokesperson for the varsity said.
The official said they will ask the security agency to have more stringent guidelines.
