Two held for dismantling, selling stolen bikes to scrap dealers

New Delhi: Two persons involved in more than 15 cases of motor vehicle theft were arrested by the Shahdara district police.
The accused used to steal vehicles to get Rs 5,000 from a person who used to cut the vehicles into pieces and sell them to scrap dealers.
The accused were identified as Akbar and Naveen. The arrest was made on the basis of a tip-off that they would come to Tahirpur on May 3.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Nupur Prasad stated that the accused disclosed that they were habitual drunkards.
They used to steal vehicles to meet their requirements of wine and drugs. After stealing bikes, they used to sell them to one Kale. Kale used to cut the bikes into pieces and sold them to scrap dealers.
"In return, the accused would get Rs 5,000 per bike from Kale. Both the accused disclosed having stolen 35 to 40 motorcycles in the last four months.
"On the basis of the disclosure, seven other stolen motorcycles were recovered," said the DCP.
Motor vehicle theft has been a concern for the city police as more than 10,000 cases of motor vehicle theft have been registered with Delhi Police in the first three months of this year.
Law enforcement officials also busted several gangs and arrested more than 800 accused involved in the theft of vehicles.
Police data accessed by Millennium Post stated that between January and March this year, around 10,130 cases of motor vehicle (MV) theft have been registered with the city police, in which 856 persons have been arrested.
Cops also claimed to have worked out 1,172 of these cases.
Meanwhile, in 2017, Delhi Police arrested more than 5,000 persons for MV theft and solved 6,894 cases.
