Two arrested at IGIA for smuggling gold
New Delhi: The customs at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Thursday said that they have arrested two men for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country.
According to customs both the accused were intercepted after their arrival from Bangkok on November 12. Amandeep Singh, Additional Commissioner of Customs said that their personal search resulted in the recovery of two silver-coated gold kadas, two gold chains, two thick gold thick circular discs which were concealed in wristwatches total weighing 685.6 grams.
One of the passengers also admitted that to have smuggled gold worth more than Rs two lakh during his past visit.
"The market value of the seized gold works out to be more than Rs 25 lakh," said Amandeep Singh.
The customs data accessed by Millennium Post shows as many as 188 cases related to gold smuggling were registered from April to September this year in which 92 Indians and 58 foreign nationals were arrested.
"Around 208.48 kilograms of gold worth more than Rs 63 crore was seized," data revealed.
More than 150 persons including the foreign nationals were arrested at IGI airport for smuggling gold into the country.
