Tree planting in city: LG Baijal sets 28 lakh target
NEW DELHI: The target of plantation of tree and shrub saplings for all agencies in NCT of Delhi for 2018-19 is about 28 lakh, including one million by DDA, LG Anil Baijal on Friday took the decision amid the controversy of cutting 17,000 trees in the city. "The LG advised to lay down uniform norms for the type of plantation that should be suitable for Delhi so that all agencies can follow the same. He also advised that emphasis should be given on planting native and fruit-bearing species and everybody should plant and adopt the trees," said an official.
LG Baijal also suggested exploring the possibility of creating a vibrant city forest with diverse flora and fauna. LG Baijal also directed that the target of plantation given to all greening agencies must be completed by September 30, 2018. He also directed that the Delhi government must carry out plantation in their surroundings along with their officers and staffs and the Forest Department must involve communities too through department concerned for the massive plantation drive.
"LG was also apprised about the action plan for awareness campaigns. Delhi Parks and Garden Society will organize workshops with the active participation of RWAs while Environment Department will organize theme based painting/Essay/debates etc with the active participation of eco-clubs/schools. The awareness campaigns will also be done through TV/FM Radio and print media," said the official.
The LG directed that a massive Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaign should be initiated within next 15 days by all greening agencies involving schools, RWAs, citizen
groups, etc.
