Traffickers target parents who can't search for their kids

New Delhi: Human traffickers in Jharkhand target those families who cannot search their children after they go missing from their village and later trafficked to Delhi-NCR – this was the revelation made by the state's child rights body, after investigation into many cases of human trafficking.

According to Jharkhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (JSCPCR), during their investigation, officials found that traffickers hardly took two months to convince poor villagers into sending their children with them, for a possibility of a better life.

Aarti Kujur, chairperson, JSCPCR, stated that traffickers are in often search of those children who always have some kind of dispute with their families.

"In several cases, we have found that after the children went missing from the village, and their families did not search for them," said Kujur.

She added that the many families even told her that if they go searching for the missing child, their will be no one to take care of their home and their other children, as they are very poor.

According to Kujur, from January 2012 to March 2018, more than 500 cases were reported in Jharkhand where residents had to face different types of trauma in the national Capital. Most of these were cases of human trafficking.

"I got the data from the state resource centre, which handled all these cases," said Kujur.

Once the children were sent with the traffickers, they would be brought to areas in Delhi-NCR, where most of the children are invariably forced into jobs like manual labourers and domestic help. In some cases, children are even pushed into prostitution.

"In most cases, the traffickers, who can be a male or a female, win the confidence of their target family and tell them to accompany them for a tour of Delhi-NCR, promising a good life for their children," said an official of the child rights body.

The traffickers make sure that the target never disclose their plan to anyone in the village. To achieve this, they brainwash the target for up to two months, after which they finally bring the child to Delhi-NCR.

"Once in the metropolitan city, the trafficked child or person is handed over to the trafficker's associates, who give him a few thousand rupees," said the official.

Most of the victims in Delhi belongs to West Singhbhum, Sahibganj and Gumla districts of Jharkhand. Recently, a girl from Gumla was chopped into pieces by her traffickers in outer Delhi, and another girl from Jharkhand was rescued from the same district. Both the girl were working as maids.
