Too smart for their own good: Snatchers held after reporting fake snatching

New Delhi: Making a PCR call to report a fake snatching incident proved counterproductive for two snatchers, who were arrested early Sunday morning.
Police said that the two accused Arjun Singh and Chetan Kumar, both 25, had thought out a foolproof plan; however, it unravelled during their interrogation and they eventually confessed.
According to police, complainant Kamod Yadav had made a PCR call around 11.45 pm on Saturday, informing cops that while on his way home, two men on a scooty snatched his cell phone near Mata Mandir and fled immediately.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (south East) Chinmoy Biswal told Millennium Post that after fleeing, the accused persons realised near Modi Mill flyover that they had forgotten behind a bag.
The bag contained a tablet PC and I-card of one of them.
The two assumed that if the bag was handed over to the police by the man they had robbed, police would easily follow their trail and nab them.
"They instantly concocted a story about the theft of their bag in New Friends Colony by two boys on a scooty.
"Then, the accused who had snatched the cell phone remained at Modi Mill flyover, while his associate made a PCR call from near Mata Mandir about the theft of his bag," said the DCP.
Apparently, Yadav had seen Singh's face during the snatching, but not Chetan's; thus, Chetan went to make the complaint.
"Chetan stated that he was on his scooty when two persons stole his bag containing his office tablet, identity cards and tiffin box. Prima facie, the version narrated by Chetan appeared to be false and there were many contradictions in his story," police said.
New Friends Colony Station House Officer Inspector Sushil Kumar grilled Chetan about his 'bag theft,' and Chetan eventually broke down and confessed the crime.
Based on the information given by Chetan, Arjun too was soon apprehended and Yadav's mobile phone was recovered
Police said that Arjun told them that he had won the Mister Delhi title in 2015-16 in the Fitness Athlete category at a Body Building Championship.
