To break engineering college mould, NSUT plans to roll out new courses
New Delhi: The dreams of several students aspiring to become engineers and make a career in the field of science will take wings as the one of Delhi's renowned engineering institutes Netaji Subhash University of Technology (NSUT) plans to add more professional and job-oriented courses in the next academic years.
An official at the university said, "The institute is planning to commence courses in Management, M Tech, Economics (Hons) and Social Science. Moreover, the administration will increase the seat capacity by 300 in various courses in the next academic year. Currently, around 1,000 students are studying in the campus."
Previously known as Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology, the institution was awarded university status by the Delhi government in September. Earlier it was a college under Delhi University.
As a result of its university status, NSUT now has 85 per cent reserved seats for the Delhi students, while the 15 per cent are for students from other states.
"Under the expansion plan, the institute will soon enhance the seats in the existing courses of Software Engineering and Electrical Engineering, and also enhance the strength in degrees in Mathematics and Computers Sciences.
"Management courses are much in demand and the administration is also taking initiatives to introduce a Management department. It is also in process to hire faculties for management courses. Soon, university will provide degrees of both MBA and BBA," said the official.
The official added that varsity also wishes to breach its identity of being exclusively an engineering institute.
A proposal has been sent to the Delhi government for the induction of courses in Economics and Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Education, as well as Architecture and Design.
Both undergraduate and master degree programmes will be commenced for these courses.
"We are heading toward the target of achieving around 12, 000 seats in NSUT, but gradually. Also, we are taking efforts to fill the 74 vacant posts in the university. The institute has 284 sanctioned faculty posts," official added.
The Delhi government has allotted around Rs 110 crore for the development and functioning of the varsity. "We have no dearth of space and funds as government will doubled the sanctioned amount in the next fiscal year," the official further said. He added that the varsity has procured a no-objection certificate from the Delhi Development Authority, for moderately developing infrastructure of the institute.
