Thousands of trees at risk of being cut
Gurugram: There may be yet another scenario where the price of development in Gurugram has to be paid by city's trees. As there is a proposal to build a flyover at the Atul Kataria Chowk, there is a possibility that over 1,300 trees may be axed.
The local authorities in-charge of the project has sent a proposal to the higher authorities and sought their permission to cut these trees. In another scenario, where again city's green cover will be impacted, there are also plans to cut more than 100 trees as the Gururgam civic body plans to develop the Bal Bhawan at Sector-4 further.
Lakhs of trees over the years have been felled in Gurugram as the city has expanded to most favored residential and commercial cities in the country.
More than six thousand trees have been felled along the Delhi Jaipur Highway where the construction of flyovers and underpasses at the busy traffic intersections are underway.
Earlier also, thousands of trees were cut when NH-8 was bring converted into an expressway in 2005.
Not only NH-8 but also the areas of Golf Course road, Golf Course extension road, MG road, Sohna road have borne the brunt of rapid urbanization.
There have been reports that declining green cover over the years has compounded the challenge of falling groundwater levels and reducing the number of overseas birds that used to visit the city during the breeding season.
