Tears are back: Onion prices touch Rs 100 mark

New Delhi: While the focus of the nation remained transfixed on the political developments in Maharashtra, the onion prices in Delhi shot up to Rupees 90 per kilogram after a brief respite. Multiple measures taken by both the Central and State Government has failed to curb the sharp rise in onion prices.

Several vegetable vendors in Delhi are selling the medium-sized onions at Rupees 90 per kilogram, while the smaller variety is being sold at Rupees 70 per kilogram.

In the first week of November the price of onions

had crossed the Rupees 100 per kilogram mark, forcing

the State Government to take drastic measures to curtail its prices.

"This is unaffordable by all standards. How can we buy onions at such a high price? Surely, the common kitchen ingredient has become a luxury now, we have seen several memes on social media about rising onion prices, now it's really turning scary," said Nikhat Faheem, a resident of Delhi's Jamia Nagar.

Furthermore, reports of onions being sold at Rupees 100 in South Delhi have also raised eyebrows of the people residing in these part of the city.

"Onions are being sold at Rupees100 South Delhi, making the survival of middle class difficult," said Abhinandan Chatterjee, a South Delhi resident.

Some residents of South Delhi even informed that some local vegetable vendors in their area have stopped bringing onions to the localities as they cannot afford to by them at such high rates from the wholesale markets.

The Delhi government had started to sell onions from mobile vans at a discounted price of Rupees 23.90 per kilogram. Also, the first tranche of 6,090 metric tonnes of onions imported by the Centre from Egypt will reach Mumbai port probably in the first week of December.
