Suspicious number plate lands kidnapper duo in police net

New Delhi: Delhi Police on Wednesday said they arrested two men red-handed in Dwarka when they tried to kidnap a tea vendor belonging to Haryana on Wednesday, after they came to know that he had recently got between Rs two-three crore for selling a piece of land that he owned.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse stated that on the intervening night of July 23 and 24, the picket duty staff at Jhatikara border were conducting intensive checking of vehicles when they noticed a suspicious car with a Haryana number plate.

The picket staff observed that while the number plate resembled that of a taxi registered in Rohtak, its was white and not yellow in colour.

The staff told the car to stop, but the driver sped away.

"They crossed the first level of barricading, but the picket staff immediately swung into action and stopped the car by blocking the road with a barricade at the second level, and overpowered the men inside the car," said the DCP.

On inspecting the car, cops found a bruised and beaten man, later identified as Harpal, whose hand were tied with a cloth and eyes taped shut with a black glass.

During interrogation, the two accused Vatan (30) and Jan Mahan Singh (23) revealed that they had kidnapped Harpal on Monday night at gunpoint from his tea shop near IMT Manesar in Gurugram.

Police claimed that when Harpal was alone at the shop, one of the accused accosted him told him to meet a man who was waiting in a car outside the shop, threatening Harpal that otherwise he would not be allowed to run the shop.

"When the victim and the accused reached the car, the first accused put a pistol on the victim's head and threatened him not to shout and pushed him inside the car," police said.

In the car, Harpal was beaten black and blue with the butt of the pistol, due to which he sustained injuries on the head, eyes and back.

The kidnappers demanded Rs three lakh as ransom money from Harpal, threatening to kill him otherwise. However, they were nabbed within hours.
