Suicide of DU student: Accused ex boyfriend turns himself in

One week after a 21-year-old Delhi University student committed suicide by hanging herself in her house in North Delhi, her former boyfriend surrendered before a court on Wednesday after the police mounted pressure on his parents.

The accused Ved Prakash had been evading the police and was on the run for a week. However, he decided to turn himself at Tis Hazari Court, after which he was arrested by personnel of Roop Nagar police station.

Delhi Police said they arrested Ved Prakash under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code at Roop Nagar police station.

The DU student had committed suicide after she was blackmailed by Ved Prakash, who had blackmailed her by threatening to leak her intimate photos on social media.

The victim had approached the Roop Nagar police station complaining that she has been sexually assaulted by Ved Prakash. As per the written complaint, the rape took place while she was living with the accused in Model Town area. Accordingly, the girl was asked to go and register a formal complaint at the Model Town police station.

A senior police officer had said that based on the girl's complaint, a case under Section 376 of the IPC was registered.

However, due to lack of timely police action and constant threats and caste-based slurs hurled at the victim by Ved Prakash, she was force to take the extreme step.

Later, a case was registered against him at Roop Nagar police station at the behest of a complaint given by the woman's brother. The police tried to trace Ved Prakash from various locations in Bihar, Bokaro and Kolkata.

Eventually, knowing about the mounting intensity of the police search and the pressure put on his parents, Ved Prakash decided to surrender.

Later in the day, Ved Prakash was accompanied by his advocate to Tis Hazari Court, which sent him to nine-day police custody.
