Gurugram: The revamping of Golf Course road and Cyber Greens area may have reduced the traffic hurdles faced by commuters in Gurugram. However, a new threat has emerged on the smooth roads to commuters: stunt biking.
Among the poshest areas of the Millennium City, these roads – which recently became signal-free – have became a hotspot for stunt biking.
Complaints of bikers using the signal-free roads to perform dangerous stunts and racing are on the rise.
Residents and officer-goers, who use these roads daily, complain that lack of action by authorities could result in a serious tragedy.
Grievances have also been raised over how bikers brazenly violate traffic rules, even during peak traffic hours.
"Judging the way bikers are using these roads to performing daredevilry, I will not be surprised if we witness a major accident soon. With a host of multinational company headquarters and residential condominiums located in the area, these parts are densely populated and thereby witness heavy traffic," said Amardeep Singh, a resident.
"I would still say the problem has not risen out of proportion, like it has in Delhi. However, there still are a few groups involved, and you can see the utter disregard for the law, as these activities start after 10.00 pm, where there is still a lot of traffic on the roads," he added. The problem of stunt bikers is not a new phenomenon. Earlier, when construction activities were in progress at Golf Course road and Cyber Greens, these complaints used to be reported from Gurugram- Faridabad road, albeit sporadically.
Reports of brazen violation of traffic rules were reported from Gurugram in 2017, despite Gurugram Police collecting a record Rs 13 crores in fines from over seven lakh offending vehicles. Last year, 481 people lost their lives to road mishaps in the city.
"The big problem is because you are not acting against one individual, you are encouraging others to also follow suit. Even under-age drivers are now indulging in such dangerous activities," said Rachna Shukla, another Gurugram resident.
