Students throng venues as sports trial begin at DU

New Delhi: Day one of the sports trial at Delhi University for admission through sports quota saw a rush on Friday as hundreds of students thronged the varsity's various venues to test their luck. The centralised sports quota trial will be held in 33 different sports spread across 22 venues in city. Nearly 550 aspirants for the athletic sport trials appeared at university Pologround, near Kingsway Camp. There are around 1,700 seats in all colleges for sports quota, the official said.

The University reserves 5 percent seats in all colleges under the sports and extra-curricular quota. While there is a provision for direct admission for those who represented the country in the Olympic Games, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, Paralympics and Asian championships, others are evaluated on performance in trials and achievement certificates. For sports quota, there are 12,423 applications and the first list of selected candidate will be out on July 9. For admission on sports trial basis, a maximum 40 marks will be reserved on merit/participation certificates while different level certificates will account for different marks. Colleges give 60 percent weightage on sports trial and 40 percent weightage on certificates. A student has to get minimum 30 marks in the trials.

This year, the university is not accepting state-level participation certificates from candidates. Such certificates will be accepted only if a candidate has secured a position in the game. A candidate will be given 16 marks for securing first position, 14 marks for second and 12 marks for the third position in sports competitions conducted by state sports association, state directorate of education and school boards, as per university rules.
