Students provide relief, rehabilitation to riot-hit victims

New Delhi: Students have come at the forefront of the rehabilitation and relief work in the aftermath of Delhi riots. As families are still struggling with the trauma and Coronavirus threat in the air, students from various universities are working relentlessly to ease the situation.

At SDM office in Nand Nagri, students from Jamia Millia Islamia and other universities are coming up as volunteers. "The riots have affected us all in some way. And, while we are privileged to have not gone through such horrible trauma, it is important to help our people," said Sania a student.

Meanwhile, students from universities outside Delhi have especially come to the capital, to help the riot-hit victims. A group of students, who were sorting through the ration and clothes at the SDM office said they had come from Kolkata. "We are from Jadavpur University, and have come to work as volunteers here," said one of them.

Students have also started raising funds for rehabilitation of shops and other form of tools that were destroyed or burnt in the riots. From books to school bags all sort of work is going on to ease the lives of people hit by it.

Working along with the Delhi government, these students are making lists and documents for the victims. Numerous students from law universities are also helping victims get compensation. Zehra a law student from Jamia Millia Islmia has been on ground from weeks.

"I am talking to families who have suffered and also taking down information of people who need any legal help," she said. The death toll in Delhi violence stands at 53, where 44 are said to have died at GTB Hospital, 5 at RML hospital, 3 at LNJP hospital and one at Jag Pravesh Chandra hospital.
