Street performance fellowships for 1K artistes

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government on Wednesday announced street performance fellowships for 1,000 young artistes in order to promote and mentor talent in this field.

Selected candidates, age 18-40 years, from the field of acting, direction, script-writing, dance, music and other forms of street performances will be given fellowships, said a government statement.

The 1,000 fellows will be divided into 100 groups, each of which will have at least four performances every month. The fellows will receive Rs 5,000 per month. The group leaders will get Rs 4,000 more for logistical arrangements for the shows.

The fellowships will be given by Art, Culture and Languages department.The Delhi govt will accept application till September 15, 2019. Applications are invited from individuals working in the field of acting, direction, script-writing, dance, music and other forms of street performances.

"To encourage, promote and mentor young talents, a street theatre or performing arts fellowship has been initiated by the Delhi government. Street performers are a very important part of our cultural fraternity but they have not been recognized by the governments earlier. We want to empower, encourage and strengthen the street performing art, therefore, this initiative is being taken. Street theatre or Nukkad Natak always gives a strong social message in the form of performance hence we believe that this will help bring social change," Dy CM Manish Sisodia tweeted.
