Stay away from violence, Delhi Police to student unions
New Delhi: Ahead of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) polls, the North district police swung into action on Friday and instructed student unions to stay away from any kind of violence and also from defacement otherwise they will be booked as per law.
According to police, a meeting was called with the Election Committee of Delhi University constituted by Vice Chancellor of the university and members of different student union representatives in view of forthcoming DUSU elections.
According to police, the student unions were told that there should be strict compliance of Lyngdoh Committee recommendations to ensure free and fair elections. Legal action to be initiated in case of defacement of public properties. "Refrain from violence of any kind so that everybody enjoys their democratic rights freely otherwise if found guilty action will be taken as per law," said DCP (North) Nupur Prasad.
The election committee has also guided them for strict compliance of the time schedule of campaigning and maintaining solidarity in the campus. "Ensure a clean campus, green campus. Use community radio and social media for campaigning," said the committee.
Sources claimed that during the meeting the student unions demanded more wall of democracy at visible places. The police have started their patrolling in different areas with the cameras in their hands so that they can record culprits involved in defacement. The Delhi Police data claimed that in 2018 around 166 cases have been reported of defacement of public property till July.
Last year under the same act around 1,077 cases were reported whereas in 2016 only 110 cases took place.
