Special Cell nabs criminal with Rs 50,000 reward

The Delhi Police Special Cell on Saturday arrested a criminal from Ghevra More who was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000, after a brief encounter in which the accused fired at the raiding party.

A semi-automatic pistol of .32 bore, loaded with four live cartridges, and a country made pistol of .315 bore, along with three live cartridges, were recovered from the accused, identified as Umesh.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Cell, Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, said Umesh, along with his associates, had shot dead one Amit in Mukherjee Nagar due to personal enmity on September 26. last year. The next day, Umesh and his associate Sombir had also fired on one Sudhir, Amit's paternal uncle, in Haryana.

Umesh gained notoriety as many other cases were registered against him. Accordingly, the Special Cell started tracking him.

In the wee hours of Saturday, information was received that Umesh would come near Ghevra More in Delhi to meet an associate. Accordingly, a team was formed and they acted strategically and cordoned Umesh near Ghevra More. "Realizing no other way to escape, Umesh took out his pistol and fired one round on police team in order to deter them and in a bid to escape. However, a police personnel snatched the pistol from him," said the DCP.

After leaving his studies, Umesh (23) – a resident of Haryana – started committing petty crimes at a young age. A case under the offence of theft was first registered against him in 2010. He had reportedly told gangs in Haryana and Delhi that he was ready to commit any murder in exchange for money.
