Gurugram: On May 29. last year, a 19-year-old woman was gang-raped and her nine-month-old daughter was smothered to death in Gurugram's Manesar – a case which led to widespread outrage in the district and caused massive criticism about the worsening law and order situation in the state.
A year on, the fear of citizens, especially those living in the outskirts of Gurugram, has no reason to fade away with a similar heinous act being reported from the industrial township of Manesar where a woman, who is six months pregnant, was reportedly gang-raped on May 21.
In almost a re-run of last year's case, the pregnant victim too had hailed a shared auto-rickshaw, which was occupied by three other men.
The accused drugged her, took her to an isolated spot and took turns to rape her.
Four days after the incident took place, the rape survivor managed to gain her strength and filed a complaint at a women's police station in Manesar on May 25.
"The woman, who is from Uttar Pradesh, has registered a formal complaint wherein she has complained of gang-rape. Taking cognisance of the complaint, we have begun a search operation and will soon get hold of the criminals," said Ravindar Kumar, spokesperson, Gurgram Police.
Last year's gang-rape and murder in Manesar prompted several residents of New Gurugram to file complaints about inadequate security measures in newly-developed sectors of the city.
Besides visiting offices of public officials, many residents in the newly-developed sectors are pro-actively using social media to voice their grievances to the concerned authorities.
Some of the major complaints cited by the residents include poor street lighting, minimal patrolling by police vehicles, and presence of liquor vending units in and around residential areas.
To add to their grievances, residents also claim that despite several requests to public authorities to take action, there seems to be no improvement in the security situation.
The new sectors of Gurugram consist of Sectors 81 through 95, most of fall in the way to Manesar. Most of these areas are witnessing a lot of development from the builders.
In addition to areas in New Gurugram, older area such as sectors 58-67 are facing similar problems. In most of the cases, infrastructure in these sectors remains undeveloped, as private developers in charge of construction have failed to deliver projects on time.
Taking cognisance of the issue, Gurugram police has opened new police stations in these areas, where homebuyers can file complaints.
