Since 2016, over 600 cases of public servants being obstructed from duty
New Delhi: Between since 2016 and June 2018, over 600 cases were reported in the Capital where public servant were either obstructed while doing their job or assaulted, states Delhi Police data, with cops claiming that more than 400 of these cases have been worked out.
The data pertains to cases filed under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of the Indian Penal Code.
As per the data, accessed by Millennium Post, 141 such cases have been reported this year till June, of which 107 have been solved. Last year, 292 such cases were recorded overall, among which 196 were solved. In 2016, the number was over 300, of which 231 were solved.
Situations often erupt where policemen, as well as government officials, have to go for demolition drives, during which people often protest or stop officials from doing their duties. There are even instances where government servants have been attacked by the public and arrests are made.
In February, an anti-snatching team of east Delhi's Farsh Bazar was fired at by two robbers. Eventually, the team chased the accused down, overpowered and arrested them, and recovered the stolen vehicles and arms. The culprits were booked under section 186.
In another case, an alleged auto-lifter was shot dead and his associate caught after an encounter in east Delhi's Vivek Vihar area. According to police, the encounter took place when a police team tailing them came under fire. The auto lifters also tried to overrun two constables with a stolen car.
In 2017, the city witnessed more than 9,000 programmes where a large number of people participated, such as demonstrations, dharnas and protests.
According to police, Delhi – being the seat of the Union government – witnesses numerous demonstrations, rallies, and dharnas by various organisations and people from different parts of the country on several issues, ranging from political, communal, labour to youth and student affairs.
