SDMC ramps up activities under 'Swachhta fortnight'

New Delhi: South Delhi Municipal Corporation has been intensifying swachhta-related activities under the ongoing 'Swachhta Hi Sewa' fortnight, as part of which the civic body organised a quiz competition on swachhta for students and commissioned a pit for preparation of compost on Wednesday.

Over 10,000 students of classes IV and V of SDMC schools took part in the quiz competition in 143 schools under the Central Zone.

At Tagore Garden, a compost pit was made functional in the presence of local councillor Balram Kumar Oberai and senior officers of the DEMS department.

Oberai said that it is quite simple and easy to prepare compost manure with wet waste by digging a pit, putting all such waste in it, and it keeping covered for a month.

The compost prepared is useful for parks, fields and pots, and helps in properly managing wet waste which would otherwise lie haphazard and present a filthy look.

A number of workshops on waste segregation, focusing on source segregation of waste, too were organised in various wards under the four zones.

Senior DEMS officers informed the participants about the importance and relevance of source segregation and its planned collection.
