SDMC flags off 'Terminator Train' to tackle vector-borne diseases
New Delhi: The South Delhi Municipal Corporation on Friday set off a Mosquito Terminator train from the New Delhi Railway Station's Platform No. 1, in a bid to control the spread of vector-borne diseases in the areas around the train tracks of the Capital city. Flagging off the specially customised train, SDMC Mayor Sunita Kangra said that this was a joint effort by both the SDMC and the Northern Railways to "end the menace of mosquitoes".
This train, known as a DBKM, has a low flat surface on all its coaches, where specialised trucks with insecticide sprayers provided by the SDMC will disinfect the areas near the tracks in an efficient manner. The sprayer will reach 50-60 meter from the tracks on each side and even cover localities of North MCD and East MCD.
"This is a sincere, serious and effective effort to eliminate larvae. The SDMC has provided a huge power sprayer and insecticide for spray in adequate quantity," Mayor Kangra said at the programme, where SDMC Additional Commissioner and Divisional Railway Manager SC Jain were also present. The train will be travelling from New Delhi Railway Station on 10 occasions in a span of five weeks starting from August 30 to October 4 and will pass through stations such as Hazrat Nizamuddin, Lodi Colony, Delhi Safdarjang, Sarai Rohilla, Delhi Cantt, Delhi Shahdara and come back to New Delhi Railway Station on the same route.
