SDMC exempts commercial vehicles of toll tax till Sep 13

New Delhi: South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has decided not to charge toll tax for 36 days from commercial vehicles.

On Friday, SDMC Standing Committee chairperson Shikha Rai said that the Corporation has decided to suspend toll tax collection from commercial vehicles entering into Delhi from all border points till September 13, for carrying out civil work to implement the RFID system.

However, during this period, ECC (environment compassionate charges) will continue to be collected from specified commercial vehicles, she added.

Rai informed that congestion and confusion at toll plazas over collection of toll taxes will soon end after completion of the work of installation of Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) technology at all 13 toll plazas points covering 65 toll lanes.

This technology will be used at all 13 toll points, through which 85 per cent of vehicles entering the national Capital pass.

The move is also expected to reduce pollution in the city.

Rai further stated that after this operation, RFID cards will be issued to owners of vehicles, who will be charged regularly.

"At the time of issuing the tag, we will collect all the details of the vehicle. This will help us to separate vehicles that have to pay only toll tax and those that have to pay environment concession charge(ECC) as well," Rai said.

"This RFID system will work faster as compared to the manual process of collecting toll tax and will also help in reducing traffic jams at toll plazas," she added.
