SDMC begins sprinkling water to clamp down on dust

New Delhi: South Delhi Municiapl Corporation (SDMC) on Saturday said that its tankers are sprinkling non-potable water to settle down the dust, that has caused suffocative air pollution in the city.

To this end, 40 vehicles and 42 tanks have been deployed to sprinkle water and six mechanical sweepers have been deployed for sweeping. Five illegal diesel gensets have also been seized. Under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, 5,567 challans have been issued.

The dusty air has been attacking Delhi due to dust dominated storm coming from Rajasthan. The dusty air is not only affecting atmosphere, but also proving harmful to the health of citizens across Delhi.

In view of the situation, Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Thursday had directed the civic bodies to go all out against dust pollution and stop ongoing construction, which is becoming a major cause of adding dust to the atmosphere.

As many as 249 under-construction sites have been inspected and instructions have been issued to stop work at 168 sites. Moreover, 85 National Green Tribunal challans have been issued for dumping building material and 21 for burning leaves and garbage, resulting in fine of Rs 13 lakh.

Two properties have been sealed, while 61 buildings have been challaned, resulting in fine collection of Rs 9.80 lakh.
