Safe City Project of Delhi Police: 6 districts identified for implementation of 1st phase

New Delhi: Aiming to create safe and secure environment for women in public places and to enable them to pursue all opportunities without the threat of gender-based violence or harassment, Delhi Police have identified six districts for the implementation of Safe City Project of Delhi Police.

Sources said that the move will ensure a safer city for women. The objectives of the project are to increase surveillance and visibility in public places through the installation of CCTV cameras and deployment of dedicated women safety mobile police vans (MPVs), quick and effective emergency response system to aid women in distress, to ensure thorough use of technology and prompt availability of professionally equipped police personnel to reach women in distress.

The six police districts were identified as east, north, north-west, south, south-west and west.

According to sources, the districts were approved by the State Level Apex Committee for the first phase of the project. Under the project, 10,000 CCTV cameras (fixed cameras-6,126, PTZ cameras-2,247 and ANPR cameras-1,625) are proposed to be installed in the jurisdiction of 185 police stations for surveillance at public places frequented by women.

The system will allow for recording, live monitoring, alert generation, location-based surveillance and feed sharing and to provide real-time assistance to the women facing harassment.

"All the CCTV cameras will be networked through fibre-based network or a service provider network and video feeds will be brought to C2i at police stations, C3i at district DCP and C4i at police headquarters.

"Existing C4i situated at PHQ will be upgraded with the facilities of analytics of videos received from CCTV systems," sources said. The analytical application will help in crime prevention.

"The technique will help in the identification of the presence of known eve-teasers, molesters or persons having previous involvement in crime against women through facial recognition or through ANPR data processing," sources added.

Sources said that a meeting of project steering committee for Safe City Project was held few months ago where senior officers from city police discussed the topic related to the identification of locations for installation of CCTV cameras for the project.

During the meeting, it was found that as many as 18,549 CCTV cameras were required in all districts and railways under the project. Sources further added that location of the data centre (C4i) under the project was decided in new PHQ at Jai Singh road.
