RFID project: SDMC launches website for pre-registration of vehicles

New Delhi: The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Tuesday launched a website to help vehicle owners entering Delhi from outside the Capital with their RFID tag registrations and top-ups, officials here said, adding that cash recharges at all of the 13 toll plazas will not be accepted from the midnight of September 13.

The SDMC said that despite teething problems, the RFID project's implementation is becoming effective by the day, with toll plaza lines getting shorter and the entire process getting smoother. The Municipal Corporation said that more than 3 lakh RFID tags had been sold so far but a major cause for concern was that one of the principal objectives of the system was not being achieved.

Officials said that out of the more than 3.06 lakh RFID being used, other than 429 transactions, every transaction was being carried out in cash. At the time of implementation, the SDMC had said that one of the main objectives of the project was to promote the idea of going cashless and educating RFID users about the way to recharge their tags with cards or net banking.

In keeping with that logic, the Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Association Chairman, Bhure Lal launched the RFID website to provide an easy and helpful platform to get commercial vehicles pre-registered so that tags could be procured in a hassle-free manner and recharge facility could be provided online. The website hosted at www.ecctagsdmc.com is expected to go a long way in addressing problems faced by commercial vehicle owners and drivers to get their RFID tags registered and top-up their tags regularly. The online facilities available on the newly launched website will provide ease to these commercial vehicle owners and drivers in getting their vehicles pre-registered, get their RFID tags at their desired place out of a total of 13 toll plazas and recharge their tags with the click of a mouse.

Speaking at the website's inauguration, Lal said that the EPCA is keen to make the RFID project fruitful to enable it to curb air pollution, minimise fuel wastage while waiting at toll plazas and reduce crowd at the entry points of the Capital.

EPCA member Sunita Narain, who was also at the inauguration hopefully said that the entire RFID system will get smoother by the day as SDMC and EPCA continue working together on it. SDMC Mayor Sunita Kangra appreciated the two agencies' efforts to bring success to the RFID project.

This project, once fully implemented, will become India's first congestion charging system, where payment is cashless. Transporters are advised to use the easy online recharge facility (website or APP) or visit the 28 POS centers, set up for registration and for recharge as cash transactions will be shut from midnight of September 13. The recharge facility will be available even after registration and the new website will have three portals- one for pre-registration, one for consumers and one for POSs.

For the pre-registration process, one has to provide information about the type of the firm, name, mobile number and email id. After filling up the above-stated information, an OTP will be sent which can be used to open another page asking personal details such as – type of vehicle, type of fuel being used, plate number of the vehicle, vehicle colour, RC and valid insurance. The applicant will be getting an SMS on registered mobile number intimating about the date of collection of RFID tag on presentation of original documents at the place referred by the applicant on the website.
