Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers and a section of the city residents on Saturday observed 'House Tax Mukti Diwas' with great enthusiasm across city.
In multiple locations, people came together to burn their old house tax bills collectively. The AAP has promised that if it wins the Municipal polls, to be held on April 23, it will waive house tax in Delhi and also waive pending arrears of citizens.
AAP MLA from Jangpura Praveen Deshmukh said: "Residents of Jangpura and Bhogal are celebrating House Tax Mukti Diwas with great anticipation. Even those who had voted for BJP the last time will be voting for AAP in this election."
The AAP had promised to slash electricity bills by half and make water free before the 2015 Delhi Assembly election and managed to fulfil those promises soon after coming to power.
AAP national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had contended that the house tax has become a "major" source of corruption. He vowed to transform the North Delhi Municipal Council, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation and the South Delhi Municipal Corporation into "profit-making" bodies. The first two have been grappling with financial losses.
