Registration on last day sees rush of students at help desk

New Delhi: A differently-abled girl walks to the help desk at Delhi University and tells the help desk staff that she has filled the form incorrectly by mistake as her name has been misspelt. The staff tell her to cancel the application and file afresh with all correct details.

Thursday being the last day of online registration for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in DU, a healthy flow of students was seen approaching the help desk with various queries.

The five-member desk deals with close to 200 people daily, sorting out misconceptions and basic queries regarding DU admissions.

"A major query we have received here is the error in form filling. Some students go to cyber cafes to fill the forms and discover the errors later and then come to us for help," said a help desk staff.

There are also students from outside Delhi whose major concern is hostel availability. "Parents call us inquiring about hostel facilities. Sometimes, they also ask us about the overall environment of the college and the hostel," said a help desk member.

Other queries pertain to admission under reserved categories and sports quota. "Students come to us with caste certificates from states which are not mentioned in the central government list. We politely tell them that only those mentioned in the list are acceptable. Also, OBC certificates in the name of the student must specify whether the candidate belongs to non-creamy layer and the caste should be listed in the central government list," said another help desk staff.
