Rain brings down mercury; relief from sultry weather
New Delhi: The national Capital received heavy rains on Sunday bringing down the temperatures by a couple of degrees to provide some relief to the citizens. Delhi's maximum temperature was marked at 35 degree Celsius on Sunday but fell a couple of notches just after the dark clouds took over the sky. The met department has predicted the rain to continue this week.
Light to moderate rain was recorded in most parts of Delhi on Saturday. This will bring down the maximum and minimum temperatures by a few notches said a met official. The national capital's minimum and maximum temperatures have been floating around two degrees above the normal temperature since the last week.
Meanwhile, the heavy rains wreaked havoc in the city as commuters faced a hard time navigating through waterlogged roads and faced traffic congestion. There was waterlogging near Savitri Flyover and under Modi Mill Flyover, Mehrauli-Badarpur road, Khanpur, Okhla, near Qutub Minar metro station. Delhi Traffic Police kept posting updates about places where there was heavy waterlogging on its Twitter handle."Traffic was affected in several parts of the Capital due to heavy rain. Waterlogging was reported from several places," police said.
In the rainy season, more than 30 new locations were found with the waterlogging related problems, claimed the letters of Delhi Police which were sent to civic agencies in July. Apart from that, there are more than 60 places which were repeat offenders. The law enforcement agency claimed they are making sure that there is no chaos in the city by providing diversion in the areas affected by waterlogging. Police claimed that they sent letters to the civic agencies regarding the water logging cases and also traffic staffs are briefed about handling traffic during the rainy season.
SDMC Mayor Narendra Chawla stated earlier that the staff have been instructed to resolve the complaints at the earliest to overcome difficulties being faced by the residents. He also inaugurated a dedicated helpline number 23228325 which will remain available on all working days during office hours. The complaints will be properly monitored to avoid any loss, damage or disruption due to rainwater accumulation. The special arrangement has been made keeping in view the rainy season and expected heavy rains in days to come.
