Possangipur market is plastic free: SDMC
New Delhi: In order to eliminate single use plastic, from its jurisdiction, South Delhi Municipal Corporation on Thursday declared Possangipur market as 8th plastic free fruit and vegetable market.
SDMC officials said that the Corporation is setting an example by achieving single use plastic free status for its markets and aiming to reduce plastic waste by promoting use of eco-friendly sustainable alternatives. He appreciated the efforts of the officials and support of market association and said that initially our motive is to spread awareness about the ill effects
of using plastic and then initiate providing alternatives of polythene bags to the shopkeepers and citizens in other markets also.
They urged the shopkeepers to put up a board at their shops which appeals the customers to carry clothe and jute bags. "Our first aim was to convince small shopkeepers to be the part of single use plastic ban campaign and ditch polythene carry bags and opt for clothe and jute bags. This is the common belief that making a small fruits & vegetable market quit polythene bags is an unsuccessful task, but we wanted to challenge this reality and show people that these markets can also move towards greener and cleaner India," they said.
