Over 5K cases reported in Delhi Metro this year

New Delhi: More than 5,000 cases, mostly of mobile theft, reported in Delhi Metro Police jurisdiction were registered during January-September the current year. On the other hand, according to data, police solved all heinous cases and had controlled street crime in the Metro area. The recent arrests by law enforcement agency have also revealed that not only men but women gangs too are active in the jurisdiction.

The data accessed by Millennium Post revealed that till October, more than 1,900 cases were solved. More than 300 people were arrested. Three heinous cases, one rape and two robberies, were reported and were solved later. More than 96 per cent of all the molestation cases were also worked out. Several cases were later transferred to local police after it was found that place of incidents were outside of the Metro Police jurisdiction.

The data further added that as many as 723 cases of pickpocketing were reported in which 167 were solved, whereas 3,679 mobile theft cases were registered with Delhi Metro Police during the aforementioned period of current year.

The law enforcement agency solved 1,196 cases. More than 500 cases of theft (other than mobile phones) were also solved. According to police, drug addiction or lavish lifestyle were the common reasons behind pickpocketing or mobile theft. A few months ago, the Delhi Police (Metro Unit) had arrested around 75 criminals who were involved in theft of mobiles, purse, bags in Metro trains and stations.

According to police, the women gangs were also busted by city police. These gangs first identify the victims with bulging pockets or carrying bags standing on the Metro stations or any other crowded places from where one can board a transport. Thereafter, they surround the victims and picks the pocket or commits theft of the articles from the bags.

DCP (Metro) Vikram K Porwal said that they have taken preventive action against various gangs. "We have deployed police personnel in plain clothes who are keeping a tab on the suspicious movements. Regular patrolling is also going on," said DCP Metro. He further added that crime has decreased in Metro jurisdiction due to their efforts.
