Over 50 girls rescued from GB Road brothels since 2016

New Delhi: Since 2016, after raiding several brothels in GB Road area of central Delhi, more than 50 girls and women have been rescued by police teams of Delhi and other states, with most of the victims having fallen prey to modern-day slavery and human trafficking.

In a majority these cases, Delhi Police has assisted and given valuable help to police teams from Jharkhand, West Bengal, Karnataka and other states.

Delhi Police sources told Millennium Post that in 2016, as many as 17 girls were rescued. In 2017, the number girls rescued from GB Road was six girls and over 20 girls have been rescued so far this year.

More than 30 cases under different sections of the Indian Penal Code were also filed against different brothels.

According to a senior police officer, before any raid, specific information about the victim and her location is more important, using which police teams can rescue the girl.

Otherwise, chances of the accused can slipping away from the cops are high.

Central Delhi Police, led by DCP Mandeep Singh Randhawa and Additional DCP Anto Alphonse, has played an important role in these rescue operations.

Sharing her experience, retired Jharkhand Police officer Aradhana Singh said, "In one such case from where the girl was trafficked to GB Road, we found that the victim had been lured by one trafficker on the pretext of love. Then, through his four other associates, the girl was trafficked to the brothels from where a customer helped her in getting rescued."

"The accused, after trafficking the girl to Delhi, used to talk through the phone saying that he is working for her in Delhi and earning money. But after one month, he made no calls to her," added Singh.

This Jharkhand-based network of human trafficking works in a very intelligent and organised manner, she further said, with its main kingpin hiring several persons, including women.

During trafficking, these people keep shifting the location regularly before reaching their destination, so that no one has full information about the trafficking chain.

Most of the trafficked girls are exclusively speakers of Jhakhand's tribal languages. Traffickers target those tribal girls as their inability to speak Hindi will limit their chances of seeking help.
