Over 400 killed in road accidents this year

New Delhi: In the four months since the New Year, the city has witnessed more than 1,000 road accidents in which over 400 persons lost their lives. The Delhi Police has been conducting drives agains drunken driving, prosecution of vehicles driven by minors, counseling sessions of youths, children, and other persons regarding safe driving. Still rash and negligent driving is killing people in the city.
Data of the year 2018 (till April 15) accessed by the Millennium Post stated that 1,473 cases of the simple accidents were reported whereas 440 accidents were fatal killing more than 450 persons. The police data further stated that in 2009, as many as 2,325 persons died, while the number was 2,153 in 2010. The year 2011 saw 2,110 deaths in road accidents, whereas 1,886 people died in 2012. In 2013, 1,820 deaths from road accidents were reported, while 2014 and 2015 saw 1,671 and 1,622 deaths, respectively. Last year, the number of casualties in road accidents was 1,591, while 2017 has seen more than 1,500 deaths.
The data revealed that roads in the national Capital witnessed more than 10,000 fatal accidents and more than 40,000 simple accidents. Different types of accidents are reported in the city. In some cases, two vehicles collide with each other, while in others drivers are found to be negligent.
According to the police, the speed of motor vehicles is universally agreed to be the most important factor contributing to crash, injuries and fatalities on roads. Speed influences both crash risk and crash consequence. "Do not use the mobile phone while driving and do not mix drink and driving," said the police.
The Delhi Fire Services has also been on their toe and their data claimed that more than 300 persons lost their lives in different incidents in the city.
In the year 2017-18, they received more than 29,000 calls of different incidents in which 1,767 persons were injured and 318 died. The incident includes fire death, sewer death, road accidents, drowning and building collapse.
Recently on April 17, a man, in his 40s, was killed, and six others injured after the autorickshaw they were traveling in was hit by an SUV in south Delhi's Lado Sarai.
