Over 30 marble shops sealed in Chhatarpur

New Delhi: Amidst the uproar over sealing of Defence Colony Market earlier, South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Wednesday sealed 30 marble shops on Bhati road in Chattarpur area.
Sources in SDMC said the sealing drive was taken against traders for misusing 'agricultural land for commercial use'.
An SDMC official said that as per instructions of the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee, the building department of SDMC South Zone sealed the units.
"All the three members of the committee visited the site and directed officials to carry out sealing. During the drive, 30 commercial outlets were sealed. Most of them were marble trading showrooms," said the SDMC official.
On Tuesday, SDMC had also sealed 'Ramaya' farmhouse for extending its boundary. "The sealing action was stopped on Tuesday as immediately on the arrival of the SDMC's team, a large number of people gathered and protested against the action, forcing officials to call the police," said the official.
Meanwhile, SDMC has identified several shops, restaurants, operating in posh locales such as South Extension, Green Park, Hauz Khas and Greater Kailash, in gross violation of the laid down rules and regulations.
"A detailed list has been drawn and action will be initiated against the shop and restaurant owners of these markets who have not paid taxes to the SDMC despite repeated reminders," said the official.
