New Delhi: It was just a few days ago that South Delhi police busted a gang invovled in selling stolen vehicles to the North East. Cops unraveled a new modus operandi, finding out how cars were stolen from different areas of the Capital.
Motor vehicle theft has been a concern for the city police, as more than 10,000 cases have been registered with Delhi Police in the first three months of this year.
Law enforcement officials also busted several gangs and arrested more than 800 accused involved in theft of vehicles.
Police data accessed by Millennium Post stated that between January and March this year, around 10,130 cases of motor vehicle (MV) theft have been registered with the city police, in which 856 persons have been arrested.
Cops also claimed to have worked out 1,172 of these cases.
Meanwhile, in 2017, Delhi Police arrested more than 5,000 persons for MV theft and solved 6,894 cases.
According to police, from time to time, gangs involved in MV theft change their modus operandi, which involves tampering chassis of vehicles and selling it in the grey market.
In some cases, the accused persons have disclosed that selling stolen cars is a risky affair.
To minimise risk, they dismantle the stolen cars, take out costly spare parts and sell them off to different customers for making jugad vehicles (temporary vehicles made for transporting articles from one place to another) and as spare parts for repairing old vehicles.
The data also claims that this year, 1,507 cases of snatching have been reported in the first three months. Of thesem 546 cases have been solved and more than 800 persons have been arrested.
Last year, more than 6,000 snatchers were nabbed and over 4,000 cases were solved.
Recently, Delhi Police arrested two youth, in their early twenties, for their involvement in more than 400 cases of mobile phone snatching.
Recently, ten police stations in the Capital were providing with mini trucks to prevent street crime in the area and pick up suspects en masse.
Police sources claimed that patrolling is regularly done every day in their respective areas, from where they pick up suspects in the trucks. If they find something suspicious, appropriate action is taken.
