Out of hospital, acid attack victim can't afford costly medicines

The acid attack survivor from Delhi's Sangam Vihar, who was admitted to AIIMS after her jilted lover splashed acid on her, was discharged on Friday.

In the afternoon, the family took their daughter home, but stated that they are facing acute money crunch as they are unable to afford the costly medicines.

Payal (name changed) is the lone bread winner of the family with a small income of around Rs 4,000. Her mother works as a maid in several houses in their locality. Three of her sisters are married and her younger brother does not have a permanent job.

"She is the only working member in our family. It is hard to afford her medicines. We have already spent Rs 900 and bought medicines from outside. It would be hard to carry on her treatment. We are poor people," said Payal's sister.

The family states that they are yet to come out of the horror. Now, they want the accused to be awarded with the strictest punishment.

"We want the accused Ravi to be severely punished. He is responsible for our ordeal. My daughter is in pain," said the victim's mother.

According to Payal's family, the doctors have suggested an operation for the patient. The family also fear that if they do not get medicines from hospitals, they would land in serious trouble as they cannot afford the costly medication.

"The acid has got into her eyesand we can only hope that she recovers soon," added Payal's mother. Meanwhile, the accused Ravi has been sent to 14 days judicial custody.

On the fateful day, Ravi, in an act of revenge for his marriage proposal being turned down by Payal, had not only splashed the corrosive liquid on her face but also forced her to drink it. The incident took place in broad daylight in Sangam Vihar when Payal was on her way to office. Following this, Payal managed to run back home after which she was taken to the hospital.
