A gold trader allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of an incoming train inside Shahdara Metro station on Thursday. The deceased, identified as Manoj (45), reportedly died on the spot due to the impact of the accident. His body has been shifted to the local mortuary for post-mortem. No suicide note has been found from the spot.
A senior police official said: "We had received information that a man had allegedly fallen onto the tracks inside Shahdara Metro station. The minute we got the information, we deputed a team from the Metro police and a team of CISF officials had also reached the spot".
The team had found that Manoj had fallen into the tracks in front of an incoming train which was on its way to Rithala.
The police had immediately rushed him to the nearest hospital; however, the doctors had declared him brought dead on arrival. Metro services had resumed within 15 minutes of the accident. "The man died on the spot itself. The sheer impact of the incoming Metro was such that he received fatal injuries," said a police officer.
The police had later managed to identify the deceased as Manoj, a resident of Jyoti Nagar. The cops had also contacted his family and managed to get in touch with his brother, Pardeep Verma.
Pardeep had informed the police that Manoj was working in Old Delhi's bullion market, in Kucha Mahajani. He used to work for commissions and was also a trader. His brother has told the police that the family had not suspected anything suspicious when he left his house in the morning. So far, any possibility of foul play has been ruled out and the police have initiated inquest proceedings into the matter.
