Gurugram Police have set up the first child- friendly police station in the city.
Named, Phulwari (garden of flowers), the child friendly station has come up at Sector 51 and is one of the few stations to be operated wholly by women.
The station will not only deal with children who are victims of sexual crimes, but also those affected by domestic violence and other major transgressions in their households.
To make sure that children are not scared while coming to the station, a separate route has been created for them which will not be accessible to regular visitors. The police personnel in the station will not be in uniform and will deal with the visitors in plain-clothes.
A psychologist will also be present at the station to deal with troubled children, as well as a care taker to look after the children while they stay in Phulwari. Fairy tale books, toys, puzzles, art and craft items and a playground are other prominent features at the station. Extra services, such as a separate bedroom and bathroom have also been ensured in the first-of-its–kind police station.
"Often there is a fear of police among people, especially children. This prevents them from being candid with the police personnel.
In our interactions, we have witnessed that children who have suffered sexual abuse or other offence are too nervous to speak anything.
A perception has to be built where people realise that police personnel humane. Phulwari is an attempt in this step where we have emphasised on engagement," said ACP Dhaarna Yadav, who has been credited for setting up Phulwari."Phulwari is the continuation of the counselling centres that Gurugram Police has initiated in the past," mentioned Yadav.
