The marriage season is not just auspicious for the bride and the groom and their families but also for others who are eagerly waiting to 'strike'.
A group of women in Madhaya Pradesh's Rajgarh district packed their bags and bought tickets for Delhi once the marriage season arrived. It meant business for them. They were wedding thieves targeting high profile marriages in Delhi. Their targets included rich families who hosted weddings in five star hotels and lavish banquet halls.
Several teams of Delhi Police were looking for this notorious gang of women who easily decamped with jewellery after targetting a marriage in a five star hotel in Connaught place.
The incident was reported by Ram Khetan who hosted the marriage ceremony of his daughter in the posh hotel on January 29. Everything in the marriage was going smooth until his wife told him that the jewellery bags she was carrying were missing. Immediately the family informed the cops.
The cops soon searched for the CCTV cameras installed in the hotel to get some clues.
"After the CCTV footages were scanned, our team spotted two suspicious ladies loitering around in the hotel. They were also seen stealing the jewellery boxes from the victim," said B K Singh, DCP (New Delhi).
A team under the supervision of SHO Connaught Place, was constituted to arrest the ladies.
Soon, the cops received information that the above modus operandi is of an MP gang who travel from Rajgarh District to Delhi in the marriage season to commit thefts.
The cops soon got information that these two ladies would be coming to Uttam Nagar Metro station and a trap was laid. As they came in an auto, they were nabbed. Investigation revealed that the auto driver was also their accomplice.
"The ladies, Shabana and Sanjo, revealed that they are sisters and used to visit Delhi during the marriage season. They stayed in hotels near railway stations and have an auto driver as an accomplice named Altaf from Delhi whose auto was used to flee after the commission of the crimes," Rajendra Prasad Meena Additional DCP (New Delhi) said.
The cops recovered the jewellery from their possession. On interrogation, the sisters confessed to have been involved in thefts in Lajpat Nagar, Vasant Kunj, Kotwali and Tuglak Road.
The cops have taken the remand of the ladies to know how many more cases they are involved in and where they sold the stolen jewellery in MP.
