Gangs with members from other states a major challenge

The burglary at the private gold finance company branch in the heart of the city is among a list of recent daring heists committed in and around Gurugram.
Not only are burglars able to commit such crimes fearlessly, but even weeks after the incident most of the culprits successfully evade law enforcement authorities and escape arrest by Gurugram Police.

Intriguingly, the number of perpetrators in such daring and dangerous heists ranges only between five and 10 members. Yet, these gangs are able to outsmart the more than 3,000-strong Gurugram Police regularly and continue their criminal activities in the city and its surrounding areas.

According to sources in the Gurugram Crime branch, there are various reasons why these gangs have been successful. Sources highlight that most members of such gangs do not belong to the city, but are from outside areas.

Many of the dreaded gangs — which have been involved in recent criminal activities in Gurugram — have come from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Mewat, highlight the police officials.

Further, sources also highlight that most of these gangs do not work with permanent members. These gangs regroup with different members after committing each crime, so that the members and their antecedents do not get registered in police records.

"Police have been able to successfully eliminate the city-based gangs. It is now the small gangs based in Mewat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh that are committing crimes like burglaries, extortion and murders. There are no permanent members in such gangs which commit these crimes. This has been done deliberately to be out of the radar of the police," said a senior level Gurugram Police official.

Police sources highlight that the main city of Gurugram continues to be the most sought after area for criminals to indulge in such activities.

However, of late, most of the gangsters have been targeting areas in Sohna and Pataudi, as they provide them with easy escape routes.

"Adding to the challenge of the police, after committing a major crime most of these gang members take a long break. In this period, they continue to live as normal citizens," stated the police official.

Headed by DCP (Crime) Sumit Kuhar, Gurugram Police recently held a meeting with police teams of nearby regions of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Mewat.
