A 30-year-old Sudanese national, who had been admitted to a private hospital in South-East Delhi to undergo a treatment, has alleged that she was raped by a man in Jasola village. Police have registered a case and formed several teams to probe the matter.
According to the victim, she does not recognise the accused and has no idea where she was taken precisely. All she could do was to take the cops to a place in Jasola village where she alleged the incident took place.
The woman had come to India in October last year for undergoing a treatment at the private hospital, which is ongoing. On Tuesday, her uncle came to Sarita Vihar police station to file a missing report that his niece is missing. Sensing the gravity of the matter, police registered a case and started searching for the Sudanese woman.
However, as the cops were searching for her at different locations, the woman herself came to the police station with her uncle around 11.30 pm.
The woman or her uncle initially did not say anything about the rape. Later, she said that she was raped by a man who took her to a secluded spot somewhere near Apollo Hospital in Jasola by a man who had come on a battery rickshaw or cycle rickshaw.
To help understand her language, police brought five to six Sudanese translators so that vital details of her statement become clear. "She is unable to understand and speak English so we had to rope in some Sudanese translators to know the exact sequence of events," said a senior police officer.
It is still unclear how the woman reached Jasola village. Cops are also questioning local battery rickshaw drivers and cycle rickshaw pullers.
Police have formed several teams and are collecting CCTV footage of the area where the woman said she was raped. The roads leading to Jasola village, where she was residing, and its adjoining areas are being scanned for clues.
"We have registered a case under Section 376 of the IPC, according to the statement given by the victim and are thoroughly investigating the case" said Romil Baniya, DCP, South East.
