To woo voters, North MCD to give mobile phones to 28k workers

With the Municipal elections around the corner, the cash-strapped North Delhi Municipal Corporation on Friday announced a multitude of measures in its Budget finalisation. The Corporation, which has witnessed halting of civic services on various occasions owing to non-payment of salaries of its staff, has claimed to materalise the announcements before the end of the current financial year.
The Budget finalisation said that in order to ensure coordination between residents, sanitation staff, and Corporation officials, it has been decided to distribute mobile phones to all 28,000 workers. All 104 Councillors will be provided drivers for their vehicles to ensure their seamless movement in their concerned wards. At least two toilets for women and one for differently-abled persons will be constructed in each ward. "A mobile phone with connection will be provided to safai karamcharis so that they can be contacted and directed easily for sanitation services," said Standing Committee Chairman Pravesh Wahi.
He also announced the regularisation of about 6,000 daily wagers in different departments against the vacant positions. In a move to ensure social security, rickshaw pullers who register themselves with the Corporation would be provided an insurance cover of Rs 25,000 to 50,000.
On generating source of revenue, Wahi said: "The Corporation will now provide facility of placing advertisements on its website to get Rs 10 crore expected income from it. Also, hawkers of weekly markets now need to be registered with the Corporation so they can earn their livelihood with respect and dignity. This would also help the Corporation to earn Rs 5 crore annually."
He further added that two lakh properties have been identified which did not pay property tax. North MCD would collect property tax from two lakh property owners who did not pay the tax earlier and expects to earn Rs 250 crore in each of the next two financial years. Revenue of Rs 200 crore is expected by regularisation of illegal constructions. All farmhouses in North Delhi would be registered as per the Master Plan-2021 and monthly fees would be recovered from them. It is expected to fetch a good revenue.
"Eight storeyed parking lot with a capacity of 900 cars would be developed at Rajender Nagar near Karol Bagh Metro Station. The project would cost Rs 92.34 crore. A flower park will also be developed in every ward which has more than 10 parks. Flowers developed in these parks would be sold in open markets. Parks of more than 2 acre area would be developed and maintained with the cooperation of private partners which would be handed over the right to grow and sell plants in the nursery," he said.
"Efforts are being made to sterilise and vaccinate 1,000 dogs daily with the help of NGOs, private veterinary doctors and interns of various veterinary institutions at Sterilisation Centres and other vacant buildings of the Corporation in various parts," the Chairman added.
