NDMC’s Vice Chairperson Chahal raises concerns over inadequate water supply

New Delhi: Kuljeet Singh Chahal, Vice-Chairman of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), has raised concerns over the inadequate water supply to New Delhi under Delhi government. Chahal emphasized that while the NDMC requires 225 million liters per day (MLD) to ensure a steady 24x7 water supply, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is currently providing only 125 MLD, falling short by 100 MLD.

“The current water supply situation is manageable in winter, but it becomes a serious issue during the summer months when water consumption rises,” Chahal explained. He pointed out that the NDMC serves 21,921 consumers, including 18,783 domestic and 3,031 commercial users, relying on a 450 km-long pipeline network.

Despite having no leaks in the system, water disruptions continue, which Chahal attributes to the insufficient supply from the DJB.

In response to water supply challenges, the NDMC is rolling out the first phase of a 24x7 water supply initiative, including infrastructure upgrades and the ‘Har Ghar Jal’ scheme to provide piped water to 9,386 families in slum clusters.

Additionally, two new underground storage units are proposed.
