Most horrific scene we have ever seen, say residents of Hari Vihar

New Delhi: "The children were desperately crying for help. It was a horrific scene which I will never forget for the rest of my life," said Ravi, who witnessed the aftermath of the roof collapse in Dwarka's Hari Vihar area which claimed Sunil and his wife Rachna early Monday morning.

Residents of the area were the first to start rescue work and retrieve the family members, who were stuck in the rubble.

As soon as Abhinav, who lives 50 metres away from Sunil's house, heard a loud noise, he rushed to the first floor of his house and informed his elder brother Ravi about the incident.

Ravi reached to the terrace and realised that Sunil's house had collapsed.

"I alerted the neighbours and went to the house with five other youths to try to broke open the lock but failed. So we jumped the wall and found two children, Vaibhav and Gulshan, sleeping on the other bed," said Ravi.

Ravi asked the boys about their parents and the two pointed towards the debris covering the other bed.

The youth immediately started removing parts of broken roofs, when they suddenly heard the crying of nine-year-old Gungun asking for help as well.

Rohit, another local youth who helped in the rescue work, said that Gungun was rushed to DDU Hospital in a PCR vehicle, from where she was referred to another hospital after basic treatment.

However, her parents were fatally injured and passed away soon.

Talking about the family, the residents said that they were economically weak, but very humble and helpful to neighbours and living in the area for over five years.

"Sunil worked in a shoe factory, whereas Rachna was a housewife," the residents said.

The three orphaned children are now staying in the residence of some locals. After recovering from their injuries, the children began weeping inconsolably when they were told of their parents' demise.
