Metro smart card becomes common mobility card

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government on Friday announced that Delhi Metro smart cards will serve as common mobility cards and will now be valid for payment of tickets on all DTC and cluster buses as well.

The service began in the Capital from Friday, with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party confirming the news on its official Twitter handle and tagging Delhi transport minister Kailash Gahlot to the post.

Delhi has around 3,900 Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and over 1,600 cluster buses, and the common mobility card will be valid for all buses. Common mobility card had been proposed during the Commonwealth Games 2010, but the project did not take off due to financial reasons.

The pilot project was launched by the Delhi government earlier in January. As part of its plan to strengthen the public transport system, the AAP government has chalked out a plan to buy 3,000 new buses till December, install CCTV cameras and Wi-Fi services in buses.
