Meerut video wrongly shared as Delhi lynching incident on Twitter

New Delhi: In an attempt to be the 'first' to tweet the video of the Old Delhi Railway station thrashing of a Madarsa teacher by hawkers, the verified handles of twitter too fell for an old video of Meerut where a bearded man is seen being thrashed by a group of men on the road.

Soon the video started gaining retweets and several people started commenting on it assuming it to be a genuine video of the deceased Mohammad Owais who was brutally beaten up near Old Delhi Railway station. Owais later succumbed to his injuries.

The matter was also brought to the notice of Delhi Police officers who in turn started the procedure to verify the alleged video.

"Since the video in question was shared as that of North Delhi incident, we started verifying and but found that the bus seen in the background is not from Delhi but UP. Secondly, the hotel seen in the background turned out to be from Meerut," said North Delhi DCP Harendra Singh.

The police searched the hotel name on google maps and found the hotel with the same name is located in Meerut. Some of the verified handles on twitter later took down the video.

The video shared is said to about an incident where a man was thrashed by the general public on allegations of eve-teasing inside a bus in Meerut in August this

year.
